The Use Case Shed Beginner guide

Explain a paragraph in plain language.

Ask a text-chat tool to explain a short paragraph in plain language.

Workflow tested in Codex

What you will make

A plain-language explanation in three bullet points.

01 / Get ready

Before you start

  • A text-chat tool you already have. Availability and limits depend on your account; sign in if your tool requires it.
  • A short everyday paragraph or notice. Start with the invented community-room notice below.
  • The original paragraph beside you so you can compare every condition and number.

Safe sample: a community-room notice

The community room is available on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Groups of more than eight people must reserve at least two days ahead. Smaller groups may drop in, but entry is not guaranteed if the room is full. No bookings or drop-ins are available on November 7 because the room will be closed for maintenance.

This notice is invented. It deliberately leaves some details unstated, including the year. Remove private details before trying your own example.

02 / Give it a go

Try the workflow

  1. Open a new text chat.

Have the original notice available. This example works by pasting text into the chat.

  2. Send the complete prompt below.

It asks for three bullets, preservation of the original conditions, and a list of missing details.

  3. Compare the explanation with the notice.

Check the hours, group-size wording, reservation period, full-room condition, and maintenance closure.

  4. Try another short paragraph.

Replace the text after “Notice:” with your own paragraph. Keep the instructions, then check the explanation against its source before using it.

The complete prompt

Original prompt by Use Case Shed. Copy the complete text to try the recorded example.

Explain this notice in plain language in three bullets. Preserve every condition, exception, date, and number. Then list anything the notice does not tell us. Use only the notice; do not add rules or advice.

03 / Make a correction

If the result goes wrong

It simplified away an exception or filled in a gap.

Ask for a comparison with the original paragraph. Restore any missing condition and remove invented details yourself if the revision still gets them wrong.

A follow-up prompt to try

Suggested correction prompt. This follow-up was not part of the recorded trial.

Compare your explanation with the original notice, one condition at a time. Restore every date, number, exception, and limit you omitted. Remove any fact or rule that the notice does not state. Keep unclear wording visible rather than guessing what it means. Return three corrected bullets and a list of details the notice does not tell us.

What we tested

One workflow run in Codex used the prompt and invented notice shown above. The response preserved the stated hours, group-size wording, reservation period, full-room condition, and closure, and left the missing year and other details unstated. The exact model identifier was not exposed.

The ChatGPT interface and beginner usability have not been tested. A successful sample does not guarantee that another paragraph or tool will preserve every important detail.
